Kilmartin Glen: Standing with Stones

SUMMARY: Step back in time and experience the mystical world of Scotland’s earliest peoples. Shrouded in mystery but only a few hours’ drive from Glasgow lies Kilmartin Glen. This haunting landscape contains over 800 ancient monuments and is an area of international archaeological and cultural importance. Walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, speculate about ancient cultures and rituals, and soak in the atmosphere that they experienced so many centuries before.

The combination of beautiful scenery and fascinating history all set within the mystical Kilmartin Glen makes this a truly amazing day trip for history enthusiasts and lovers of Scotland’s beautiful landscapes alike.

DURATION: Single Day (can be extended to up to three days by travelling West to Mull and Iona)

HIGHLIGHTS & KEY LOCATIONS: Glasgow, Loch Lomond, Kilmartin Glen, Dunadd Hill Fort, Oban

ITINERARY: After collection from your hotel in Glasgow we will travel north through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park arriving at the picturesque fishing port of Oban in time for an early lunch; perhaps savouring the local seafood.

We will then follow the coast road to Kilmartin, admiring the wonderful sea views en-route. At Kilmartin Glen, used by humans for over 6000 years, there are monuments from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages right through to the medieval period. Most monuments are ceremonial or ritualistic in nature, and they include a linear cemetery, stone circles and standing stones, and over 100 rock art sites. Wander through these ancient monuments and let your imagination transport you back in time.

If you are feeling energetic, climb to the top of Dunadd, a royal hill fort, where you can admire the views and literally follow in the footsteps of kings; placing your foot in the hollowed-out footprint, used in the investiture of the ancient Scottish kings, at the top of the hill. While we can't guarantee you'll be recognised as king or queen of Scots, you will at least feel on top of the world!

There will be time to relax and have coffee in the excellent café.

The return journey will allow a route past Inverary Castle, Loch Fyne and finally back to Glasgow.

OVERNIGHT STOPS & ACCOMMODATION: Why not extend your tour route and include an overnight stay in Oban to allow time to explore the wonderful landscapes of the West Coast. There is also the opportunity to visit Mull or perhaps sample a dram at the Oban Distillery. An extra day will also allow more time exploring the wonders of Kilmartin Glen.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Throughout this tour there are stunning opportunities to capture your visit; Castles, Islands, Kilmartin Glen’s Standing Stones, Burial Cairns, and Rock Art, Dunadd Hill Fort.
