Our Spirit of Speyside Tour: The Malt Whisky Trail
SUMMARY: Speyside and the beautiful Spey Valley is home to over half of Scotland’s Malt Whisky distilleries and for many people the ‘spiritual’ home of whisky making in Scotland. Departing from Aberdeen this tour will travel through some of Scotland’s most glorious countryside and include the chance to tour some of the most famous distilleries in the world.
Our visits include Glenfiddich, famous for its distinctive shaped bottle and The Glenlivet, home of the first licensed distillery in Scotland. There will be plenty of time to experience both the manufacturing process and to sample and enjoy the finished product; a wonderful Speyside dram.
HIGHLIGHTS & KEY LOCATIONS: Speyside, Malt Whisky Tastings, Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Cairngorm Mountains
ITINERARY: Our day starts by leaving Aberdeen and travelling north-west through the rich Aberdeenshire farming countryside to Speyside, arriving in time for coffee at our first visit of the day, the world famous Glenfiddich Distillery. Founded in 1866 by William Grant, the award winning Glenfiddich claims to have introduced single malt whisky to the world and to this day remains one of the few family owns and operated distilleries. We will enjoy a tour lasting approximately 90 minutes finishing with a tutored nosing and tasting of four single malts.
Our lunch stop will be at a local pub, proudly specialising in locally sourced produce and offering a bar containing over 100 single malt whiskies.
Following lunch we travel to the village of Glenlivet where, in 1824, a farmer called George Smith established Scotland’s first licensed distillery; The Glenlivet. Here we will enjoy another tour and tutored tasting, enjoying a special dram drawn straight from the cask and some new and limited release expressions of The Glenlivet.
Our return journey to Aberdeen takes us through rugged Highland scenery, crossing the Lecht summit which, at 2113 feet, is the second highest mountain pass in Scotland and one of Scotland’s five ski centres.
OVERNIGHT STOPS & ACCOMMODATION: Although this is a one-day tour departing from Aberdeen, you can choose to extend your stay to include additional visits to Speyside’s highlights. We are happy to provide recommendations.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: River Spey, Mountain Scenery, Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet (NB. although photography is not allowed within distillery production areas, there are opportunities to take photos in certain places within the distilleries).
